The PADI Open Water Diver course is the entry-level scuba diving certification from PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors). Once you complete it, you are a certified diver and can dive independently with a certified buddy up to 18 meters (60 ft) anywhere in the world where recreational diving is allowed. The course combines theory, skills practice, and real dives: 1) Knowledge Development – Learn dive theory: equipment, planning, safety, physics & environment. – Can be done via PADI eLearning online, at your own pace before water training. 2) Confined Water Training – Practice scuba skills in a pool or similar environment with your instructor. – Skills include buoyancy control, regulator use, mask clearing, emergency skills, etc. 3) Open Water Dives – You complete four open water dives in the sea, ocean, quarry, or lake. – Apply what you learned under the supervision of your instructor. Prerequisites To enrol you typically must: ✔ Be at least 10 years old (Junior certifications with depth limits apply at younger ages) ✔ Be comfortable in the water with adequate swimming ability — often demonstrated by swimming ~200 m and treading water for ~10 min ✔ Complete a PADI medical form (physician approval may be required if certain conditions exist) ✔ No prior scuba experience required
