Surfing in Mulki and Pondicherry: two coasts, what each costs, which to pick

The short version

Mulki in Karnataka and Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu are the two places in India most often named when people ask where to learn to surf. They are on opposite coasts and they feel different. Mulki has river-mouth breaks near Mangalore. Pondicherry has a beach scene at Serenity Beach, just north of the town.

On price, the beginner courses are cheaper in Pondicherry. A three-day beginner course is ₹4,800 at Kallialay Surf School in Pondicherry and ₹6,999 at Mantra Surf Club in Mulki. Every number here is the one the school published on its own listing as of 24 October 2026, and each links to that listing.

Mulki, Karnataka

Mulki sits on the Karnataka coast near Mangalore. Coral Circuit lists it with river-mouth breaks, and the site's surf pages describe it as home to some of the longest-running surf schools in the country. Five operators are listed under Mulki and nearby Udupi.

Mantra Surf Club calls itself India's original surf club, teaching at the Mulki river mouth since the early 2000s. It shows 4.7 from 1,010 Google reviews and publishes a full price list, per person, for groups of up to ten. Beginners: ₹6,999 for three days and ₹11,999 for five days. Intermediate: ₹16,499 for seven days, ₹22,499 for ten days and ₹31,999 for fifteen days.

Aquatic Indica Surf School (4.8 from 1,199 Google reviews) is listed in Mulki without a price. Kadal Surf School in Udupi (5.0 from 965) is the same. The Shaka Surf Club at Kodi Bengre (4.6 from 320) lists a 90-minute introduction lesson at ₹1,800, a 60-minute private lesson at ₹3,000, board rental at ₹1,000 for 90 minutes, and camps from ₹9,000 for one night to ₹24,000 for six nights. KayakBoy Mulki (4.8 from 9,052 Google reviews) appears on the same page with no price. See surfing in Mulki.

Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu

Four schools are listed. Kallialay Surf School teaches at Serenity Beach and describes itself as one of India's oldest surf schools. It shows 4.8 from 327 Google reviews and publishes its prices per person, for groups of up to ten: a 90-minute group lesson at ₹1,700, a 60-minute private lesson at ₹2,400, a three-day group course at ₹4,800, a seven-day course at ₹11,200 and a fifteen-day intermediate course at ₹24,500. It is the only Pondicherry surf listing with a Book button.

The other three list no price: Pondicherry Surf School (5.0 from 542 Google reviews), Mother Ocean Surf School (4.9 from 929) and École de Surf Pondy and Surf House (5.0 from 645). Send the same enquiry to two of them and compare the replies. See surfing in Pondicherry.

Side by side

One lesson: a 90-minute group lesson is ₹1,700 at Kallialay and ₹1,800 at Shaka. A private lesson is ₹2,400 at Kallialay for 60 minutes and ₹3,000 at Shaka for 60 minutes.

A beginner course: three days is ₹4,800 at Kallialay and ₹6,999 at Mantra, a difference of ₹2,199. Five days is ₹11,999 at Mantra. Kallialay's nearest listing is seven days at ₹11,200, so the two are not like for like.

An intermediate course of fifteen days: ₹24,500 at Kallialay and ₹31,999 at Mantra. Mantra also sells ten-day and seven-day intermediate levels, which Kallialay does not list.

Neither listing states what a course price includes. Ask whether the board, the leash and a rash vest are covered, whether the price is per person, and whether GST is added at the counter. Shaka lists board rental on its own, which shows that boards are not always bundled.

When to go

Coral Circuit's season line for surfing in India reads: the big monsoon swell runs May to September, and beginner waves are friendlier from October to March. Both places are marked year round on the site. The line is the same for both pages, and the site holds no month-by-month wave data for either beach, so ask the school about the month you have in mind.

The coasts differ in weather. Karnataka faces the south-west monsoon. Pondicherry is on the east coast, where the rain comes later in the year, and its city record gives October to May as the season for sea activities. Both schools list opening hours on Google, 7 am to 7 pm at Mantra and 7 am to 6:30 pm at Kallialay, with a note that seasonal hours may differ. Confirm before you travel.

Which one to pick

Pick Mulki if you want to spend several days on a course at a school that has taught on the same river mouth for two decades, with five operators listed on the Mulki page and a camp option at Shaka. Pick Pondicherry if you want the lower listed price, a town close to the beach, and a first lesson you can book online at Kallialay.

Coral Circuit's surf pages for both places say schools run 90-minute beginner sessions on soft-top boards in whitewater, and that most people stand up on day one. Take a lesson rather than only renting a board. Most schools ask that you can swim. If you cannot, say so in the enquiry.

If you also dive

Pondicherry has a second reason to go: it is a dive hub. Try dives are listed at ₹6,500 at Urban Nomad Unbound Adventure and ₹7,500 at Temple Adventures, so a morning lesson and a dive can share a weekend. The first scuba dive guide covers what a try dive buys, and Pondicherry on Coral Circuit lists the shops. For a wider comparison across Kovalam, Varkala and Goa, read learning to surf in India.
