The short version
A first surf lesson in India is listed from ₹1,700 at Kallialay Surf School in Pondicherry and ₹1,770 at Bay of Life in Kovalam, the Kovalam near Chennai. Both are 90-minute group lessons for beginners. A private lesson is ₹2,360 at Bay of Life and ₹2,400 at Kallialay. A three-day course starts at ₹4,800.
Those are the only two schools in the four places this guide covers that have published a price on Coral Circuit. The others show "Price on enquiry". Every number here is the one the school published on its own listing as of 17 October 2026, and each links to that listing.
Where to learn
Kovalam (Covelong), Tamil Nadu
This Kovalam is the fishing village south of Chennai, also spelt Covelong. It is not the Kovalam in Kerala, which is a scuba spot. Three schools are listed. Varkala, Kerala
Four schools are listed: Elixir Surf (5.0 from 701 Google reviews), Mahalo Surf (5.0 from 430), Moana Surf Club (4.9 from 1,353) and Ruasta Surf School (4.9 from 522). None has published a price on Coral Circuit. Send the same enquiry to two or three and compare the replies. See surfing in Varkala.
Goa
Goa's surf schools sit on the north beaches. In Arambol: Surf Wala (4.8 from 641 Google reviews) and Goa Surf School (4.9 from 741). In Mandrem: Jack's Surf School (4.5 from 6,530) and Salty Soul Surf Shack (5.0 from 625). In Palolem, in the south, Samson's Kiosk (4.9 from 645) teaches surfing and rents kayaks. Also listed: Mulki and Udupi, Karnataka
Not one of the four, but two schools here publish prices. The Shaka Surf Club at Kodi Bengre lists a 90-minute introduction lesson at ₹1,800, a 60-minute private lesson at ₹3,000, board rental at ₹1,000 for 90 minutes, and surf camps from ₹9,000 for one night to ₹24,000 for six nights. Mantra Surf Club in Mulki lists a three-day beginner course at ₹6,999 and a five-day course at ₹11,999. See surfing in Mulki.
When to go
Coral Circuit's own season line for surfing in India reads: the big monsoon swell runs May to September, and beginner waves are friendlier from October to March. That is one line for the whole country. The site holds no month-by-month wave data for any beach, so ask the school about the month you have in mind.
By coast, this is what the site's records say. The city records for Goa, Chennai and Pondicherry give October to May as the season for sea activities. The surf destination records for Goa, Varkala, Pondicherry, Chennai and Mulki are marked year round. Goa, Karnataka and Kerala face the south-west monsoon, and the water sports counters close for it. Chennai and Pondicherry are on the east coast, where the rain comes later in the year.
Beginners do not need the big swell. A school teaching first-timers wants small, clean waves, which is why the site's line points to October to March.
What it costs
From the published listings: a 60 to 90 minute group lesson is ₹1,700 to ₹1,800. A private lesson is ₹2,360 to ₹3,000. A three-day course is ₹4,800 at Kallialay or ₹6,999 at Mantra. A week is ₹11,200 for seven days at Kallialay or ₹11,999 for five days at Mantra. A camp with a bed is ₹9,000 to ₹24,000 at Shaka.
Lesson listings on Coral Circuit have no field for what is included. Shaka lists board rental on its own at ₹1,000, which shows that a lesson price does not always say whether the board, the leash and a rash vest come with it. Ask. Ask too whether the price is per person and whether GST is added at the counter.
No listing states how many learners share one instructor. Ask that in the enquiry; a small group is the difference between standing up on day one and watching from the sand.
What to bring
Swimwear that stays on in a wave, and a rash vest or a tight t-shirt over it to stop board rash and sunburn. Sunscreen put on before you arrive, not at the board, because it makes the wax slippery. Water, a towel and dry clothes. Leave jewellery and your phone in the bag. If you wear contact lenses, take them out or wear goggles.
Most schools ask that you can swim. If you cannot, say so in the enquiry and let the school decide; some teach the first lesson in waist-deep water.
